Mentor Logs

Go to p. 8-3 in your capstone handbook (or view for the capstone handbook online) for an overview of what to include in every mentor log. Post a mentor log to your blog within three days of spending time with your mentor and/or working on your physical project. 

• It is up to you how you format your mentor logs, but you must make sure to include the required content.

•  The mentor logs are very important to your project-- it is how you monitor your progress throughout the physical project, it is how your mentor observes your progress, and it is how I evaluate you on your capstone project. 

• Share your blog URL with your mentor!

•  Use your best judgement as to how frequently you should post a mentor log (if you spend 10 minutes on something, you probably don't have much to write about.)

For an example of what is considered to be a thorough and well-done mentor logs, go to http://austingumban.blogspot.com/. This former SSFHS student did an excellent job documenting his work on his physical project and setting goals along the way. 

Evaluating Lady Macbeth or Macbeth's Personality

After taking the personality disorder "test" in class, enter your answers online at the link on the back of the survey (you can also click here.) Remember that not every question may have a direct correlation to Macbeth or Lady Macbeth, so think realistically and make the best choice.

The results are categorized as such: very high, high, moderate, low. Depending on the results you get for Lady Macbeth or Macbeth, choose the results with very high and/or high to focus on. Educate yourself on those personality disorders by doing some quick Google searches- don't forget about operators and filters!

Once you have a basic understanding of the selected personality disorders, type a letter to either Macbeth or Lady Macbeth (depending on who you took the test for) in which you act as the doctor diagnosing him/her. Describe the symptoms of each disorder and offer some possible solutions for cures or easing these symptoms. Or, do you think Lady Macbeth or Macbeth are a lost cause?

This is letter, so begin with a salutation (greeting), and end with a closing. You are a doctor, so write your letter as if you are an informed professional!

All About Love

At the conclusion of this week’s mini-lesson presentations, you will write a blog post in which you explore at least one specific portion from All About Love. Looking at all ten of the chapters, which aspect(s) do you think is most important when dealing with love? Why? Which aspect(s) do you think most people disregard or forget about? Why? Refer to your Cornell notes to identify specific points from the chapter(s) presented.

Your blog post must be posted by the end of the day on Monday, November 11th.

A Future Full of Passion

First, I wanted to thank you all for your thoughtful, moving posts last week about your heroes. I learned so much about your life experiences from your powerful descriptions of the heroes in your lives!!

In light of next week's events regarding CAPSTONE PROJECT (formerly known as "Senior Project"), today's blog activity will incorporate all of the following:

• Your blog post about following blogs from October 5
• Discussion around passion (Steve Job's speech, passion freewrite)
• Beginning to think about the Capstone Project

Some of you may know what you want to pursue as a career or major in when you go to college, while some others of you might be thinking of a few different  options, or some of you might draw a blank stare when asked what you want to do after high school. (When I was in high school, I thought I had an idea, but then as soon as I got to college, I had no clue for my entire first year!)

No matter where you lie on the spectrum, today will help you identify some possible areas of study or career fields you might be interested in!

Here's what you need to DO:

1. Go to http://careerservices.rutgers.edu/PCCPinterests.shtml. This is an interests assessment that will generally assess what you might be interested in. 

2. After finishing the assessment, click on the link to your "type" in which you scored the highest. Spend some time reading your "type" and click on "Gather Information" at the very bottom after you finish reading.

3. On the "Gather Information" page, check out what suggestions or resources are offered in relation to career options that are connected to your "type."

NOW.... here's what you need to 
POST TO YOUR BLOG:

Make your "type" the title of your post. In your blog post, include:

• Your type and a brief summary of what that means.
• A few possible majors AND career options related to your type.
• A reflection that addresses the following: Are the results from this career/interest inventory what you expected or are they entirely different from what you thought? If you already have an idea of what you want to pursue after high school, did this exercise connect to what you originally had in mind? If you went into this activity with no clue, did this help you consider some potential options.

Commenting:

• Comment on MY BLOG by telling me what your type is. (Sentence frame: My type from the survey is __________.)
• And, as always, read and comment on AT LEAST THREE OTHER BLOGS. 

Your Hero

Who is your hero? 

Really think about this before you just start typing. Consider all of the different types of heroes we have explored throughout the past few weeks, from Master Legend and Mr. Extreme, to Beowulf, to Edward Bloom, to ordinary people responding to danger. What makes your hero a hero to you? How does this individual compare and contrast to the heroes we have studied? Be specific and clear as you make connections to the texts we have read/watched.


At the end of the designated writing time, I will instruct you to read and comment on at least three others' blogs.

Blogging about Blogs

It's time to start expanding your blog reading list! There are thousands and thousands of blogs on the Internet from which you can learn, so today you will spend time researching other blogs (outside of our class) to follow. Here's the criteria for following other blogs:

1. The topic must be appropriate for school. Use good judgement!

2. The blogs you add to your reading list need to somehow connect to what YOU are interested in pursuing after high school (college and/or career oriented.)

3. Be sure to follow blogs that are active- if a blog does not have many posts (or recent posts), don't follow it.

4. You must follow at least three new blogs.

Then....
Once you have found a blog you want to follow, add it to your Reading List. Then, when you finish finding three blogs, post the URLs to your blog (see "Link" when you are creating your blog post) and explain what each blog is about and why you chose to follow each blog.

Here are some recommendations for finding blogs:

Do some google searches for blogs related to your interests- newspapers, businesses, sports all use blogs. Try to find credible (real, believable) blogs to follow so you have a better chance of getting good information.

A pretty good list for blogs for college students- see if you can find something interesting!
