Creating Your Blog

Welcome, Class of 2015!

Welcome to BLOGGER! If blogs are new to you, don't worry-- you will get lot of practice. If you already have a blog, a lot of this may not be new for you.

Objective: You will create a blog
By the end of the period, this is what you must accomplish:

1. Create a blog with a new or preexisting gmail account at www.blogger.com
2. Follow my and three other classmates' blogs.
3. Send me your blog URL on Schoolloop.
4. Create a "Welcome!" post on your blog. (See "POSTING" below.)

And here's how to do it:

1. In a new tab, go to: www.blogger.com

2. If you currently have a gmail email account, you can sign in with your email and password. If you do NOT have a gmail email account, you will need to sign up for one. DO NOT FORGET YOUR GMAIL ADDRESS OR PASSWORD- this is how you will log in to access your blog. Write this down on the inside cover of your notebook NOW. (During the sign-up process, you will enter an existing email address that you already use in case you ever need to reset your password.) You will need to enter your phone number to complete this step. Google will send you a text with a number- it is OKAY to use your phone for this step. Don't have a phone with you? Raise your hand.

3. When you are ready to create your blog, you will see that you can create any URL you want (as long as it is available.) The URL of your blog is how you (or anyone else) can find your blog online (it's the "www." part.)

4. When choosing your title, please make sure that your first and last names are in your blog title (NOT the blog URL. For example: my blog URL is: http://msdekoven.blogspot.com but my blog's title is SSFHS ERWC.) If you don't include your name in your blog title, I won't know it's your, and you won't get credit for it.

5. Write down your blog URL in the front cover of your notebook NOW. When you finish, send me a LoopMail on Schoolloop with your blog URL so I can start following you back. (The URL is the website address of your blog.) This is how I will check that you have created your blog and followed me + three other blogs. (See below.)

6. When selecting a blog template, choose any one you like EXCEPT for "Dynamic."

FOLLOWING BLOGS:

Once everything is complete, go back to your dashboard (the blogger "homepage" with your account info.) Look for "Reading List" on the left, and "follow" my blog by clicking "add." Enter "msdekoven.blogspot.com PLUS at least THREE OTHER blog URLs of your classmates. I will follow you back, too.

POSTING TO YOUR BLOG:

Lastly, you need to create your first blog post. Clock on "New Post" or the orange pencil icon. Type a brief post welcoming people to your new blog. In your welcome post, include the following: what you are excited for for senior year and if you were stranded on an island, the three items you would bring with you.

SETTINGS:

A note about Settings: You may find it useful to choose "Yes show mobile..." under Email and Mobile settings- you can view and post to your blog on a smartphone.

There are TONS of settings to play around with, so take some time to do this. You can ALWAYS change the formatting your blog without affecting posts.

There is also an app you can download on your phone to access your blog- you can always post to your blog from your phone!

Have fun and make it YOURS!

Blogging About Documentaries

There are two activities to complete today:

1. Watch an interview with a filmmaker
2. Write a blog post about what you watched (20 points.)

1. Click here to view filmmaker interviews. You can choose any clip to watch, but I strongly suggest finding the filmmaker of the clip you watched.

2. As you watch the interview, think of the following questions:

  • What things are important to the filmmaker(s)?
  • Listening to the filmmakers, what did you learn about what a documentary is?

  • 3. After viewing the interview, create a blog post that addresses both of the questions above. Also include the following:

  • The name(s) of the filmmakers and the title and subject of the documentary
  • Did you watch an interview of the filmmaker who created the documentary clip you watched?

  • If yes, how did this help you deepen your understanding of the film clip?

  • If no, how did you choose this particular interview to watch?

  • Your blog post should be at least one paragraph and contain specific.details from the interview you watched.

    Reviewing Your Peer Edit Draft

Take time today to review your peer edit draft on Turnitin.com and read your partner's comments. If you did not submit a draft, you will still create a blog post today.

Your blog post should be at least one paragraph long and address the following.

    • Develop a plan for revising your paper based on the feedback your revision partner left and what you know your paper needs. This should include formatting and content. Are you planning on asking additional people for revisions on your teacher draft? If so, who?
    • If your peer edit draft received a zero, what adjustments do you need to make in order to not receive a "no read" on your final draft? Who are you planning on asking to revise your teacher draft?
    • Reflect on the overall effort you put into your peer edit draft- was it above and beyond or too little? Somewhere in between? What kind of effort will you need to put in for the revisions you need to make?
Your blog post is due by the end of the period (25 points.)

    Theme in 1984

In a well developed paragraph, explore and justify the existence of a theme of your choice from 1984. Use your list from class to pick a theme. In your response, identify at least two quotations and specific examples that support your response.

Here are some ways to begin. You don't have to use this format, but you can if it will help you.

A theme in 1984 is [state the theme you chose.] This theme exists because [state two different examples from 1984.] [Now explain the first example in detail and include a quotation. Be sure to explain how this shows the theme.] [Repeat this step for the second example.] [Include a final concluding sentence about the theme.]

You will be graded on use of specific details from the text and connection to the theme you chose. (25 points)
